Cursillo Movement Gets New Spiritual Advisor

Father Scheip to lead movement retreats

cursillogroup1005_295Bishop Frank J. Dewane has appointed Father Michael Scheip as the spiritual advisor of the Diocesan Cursillo Movement.

Father Scheip, who is a parochial vicar at Incarnation Parish in Sarasota, said he is excited about the opportunity to serve the Cursillo Movement in such a direct way. He replaces Deacon Edward Lundy. The original spiritual advisor for the movement was Redemptorist Father Charles Mallen.

The Catholic lay movement’s objective is to penetrate the culture with Christian values by living and proclaiming them, said Movement Lay Director Alice Hofer. “We are not a club. We help people grow and have a new level of understanding in their faith.”

The Cursillo Movement conducts men’s and women’s weekends in October which includes an opportunity for participants to develop a closer and more personal relationship with Christ. Those who attend will hear presentations about the Catholic faith with a strong emphasis on learning about the Sacraments and there is an opportunity to share. The men’s weekend is Oct. 14-17 and the women’s is Oct. 21-24, both are held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat and Spirituality Center in Venice.

Father Scheip will provide the group spiritual direction as well overseeing the movement and its leaders to ensure they are spiritually correct in everything they do, Hofer said. “We are very excited about having Father Scheip join us; it is an important time for the movement.”

The Cursillo Movement began nearly 60 years ago and there are more than 1,000 Cursillista’s in the Diocese, according to current estimates.

The movement holds an annual cruise to raise funds for its retreats and programs. This year there is an 18-day Mediterranean cruise from Oct. 25-Nov. 12.
